Why assessment may be indicated
ADHD symptoms require careful clinical assessment.
Difficulties with attention, activity level, impulse control and executive functioning can affect education, relationships and family life.
Similar difficulties can arise for other reasons, so assessment considers age of onset, persistence, degree of impairment and possible co‑occurring or alternative conditions.
Assessment process
How the clinical assessment is completed.
The format is tailored to the young person’s age, presentation and the information already available.

Referral review
The consultant reviews the referral question, previous assessments, relevant records and current concerns before accepting the referral.

Clinical history
The assessment covers development, physical and mental health, family history, education, current functioning and previous interventions, with the young person and parents or guardians involved according to need.

Information across settings
Information from school and other relevant professionals, together with validated questionnaires, may be requested with consent.

Clinical formulation and feedback
The consultant integrates the available evidence, explains whether diagnostic criteria are met, discusses uncertainty and agrees recommendations.

Diagnosis is based on clinical evidence, not a single test.

Following assessment
Treatment recommendations are individualised.
Non‑pharmacological support
Recommendations may include psychoeducation, routines, organisational strategies, educational adjustments and referral to other services.
Medication
If medication is indicated, options, expected benefits, adverse effects, baseline physical health checks and monitoring are discussed.
Follow‑up
Review appointments assess symptoms, functioning, physical health, treatment response and adverse effects.

Current charges and inclusions are confirmed in writing before an appointment is arranged.
